The pre-release yesterday went very well, Steve an I both won some packs and some very exciting matches were had. As is now the tradition, my decklist can be found here.
I pulled some awesome cards in black, red, and white, but decided running black/red would give me some creature removal, direct damage, and some functional creatures. As it turned out, I think I should have ran more creatures to get more damage into my opponent.
Round one was against Marcus, a guy probably 5-6 years older than me. I had mana problems for game one, and he rolled over me without much resistance. I was also trying to figure out the new cards as well, and screwed up with Cradle to Grave a few times. The second match was much closer. Though I don’t remember specifics of what happened, I know I was able to Damnation to reset the board, and kept his creatures at bay for the most part. We whacked at each other with some great back and forth, eventually he was at 2, I was at 3, and he finished me off.
Round two was against Bodie, a fidgety 18ish guy who kept his dice in his Camel box who had his right arm in a pink cast. He couldn’t really shuffle, so he cut his deck a bunch of times to make it random. He’s the only person at one of these events I felt the need to cut my opponents deck. Not because I thought he was cheating, but because if I know where cards are when I begin to cut, no matter how many times I cut I have a general feeling of where certain cards are and wanted to make sure that wasn’t in his head. As it turned out, my matches against him were pretty uneventful in that I rolled over him both times. My second victory against him was my favorite moment of the day though. He had one blocker out, and I had a couple guys I had been coming at him with. He summoned a Volcano Hellion, killing one of my guys and taking 5 himself. He was able to pay the echo, and attacked with the Hellion, which I blocked with an Aether Membrane. The Hellion returned to his hand. My turn, I cast Treacherous Urge to take the Hellion from his hand, take out the only blocker, and attack for the win.
Game three was against Cory, a nice guy with the most annoying laugh I’ve ever come in contact with. Imagine the noise Loraine makes, but as a laugh. Awful. That aside, I couldn’t find the pocket I left my pencil in and don’t have life totals to remind me of what happened. Match one was his, match two I won, and match three was very close, and I somehow managed to put in the last bit of damage.
Steve and I were both at two wins, one loss at this point, and made a pact that we would split winnings if we wound up fighting each other in the fourth round, which is what wound up happening. He clobbered me round one, round two went to me in a very close match, and round three went to Mr. Sven. My deck just wasn’t able to stop his assault and get guys in the way.
All in all, a great day for Magic.
