What day is it? (Now with more meat)

This is very late in coming for not apparent reason.

Some time was spent on the East Coast a few weeks ago. Most of my mom’s side of the family was there, and it was great to see everyone again. I don’t know how long it’s been since I’d last seen some of them.

We all spent a good deal of time on the rocky beach. It made sand castle building more difficult, but a few buckets and digging tools were able to create a masterpiece complete with canons and bridges. The ocean was cold, the waves were as good as they could be, and the weather was perfect. Laura and I spent the remainder of the trip recovering from a sunburn acquired on the first full day of vacation.

Atlantic City was visited by Laura and I. We visited the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!, and we both left believing or not believing certain things. I believe most of the mini castle was made out of plastic instead of hand crafted out of wood. After Ripley’s, we visited the Hard Rock Cafe, lost our money at Caesar’s, and headed home.

The city of Hershey still smells like chocolate, and still has an excellent theme park. Featuring a ride where you learn how Hershey makes its world famous candy, and ten roller coasters trying to get that candy back out of you. We spent the afternoon trying to go on every coaster they had, and nearly did. The last two were wooden coasters that gave us both a good jostle. I had started the park visit with a headache, and that wooden contraption didn’t help it at all. Laura and I made it on nine of them before finding a funnel cake and taking off.

Gettysburg was next. This city will never change; in fact, they are trying to revert to 1863. The city is currently moving the visitors’ center because where it is currently located would have been a field. An excellent tour gave us the background, but I would have liked to spend more time on the battlefields. It really is a crazy feeling to stand where a Union soldier stood for Pickett’s Charge, or atop Little Round Top looking down on Devil’s Den. To me, there aren’t that many places in the States where you get the same feeling of history.

The remainder of the vacation was in Pittsburgh, where we saw the Loeffert side of the family. It was good to see everyone from Texas, as it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve seen my cousins. A lot of shopping was done in Pittsburgh, and Chick-fil-A was finally visited. I had been looking forward to Chick-fil-A since the planning stages of this trip, and it didn’t disappoint.

The return to the daily grind feels much better after spending some time relaxing.

My wonderful wife pinched pennies so that I could get an inexpensive laptop for my birthday. It does so much more than I need it to, but reducing cost any more got me a used refurbished 800 MHz from a random guy on Amazon. Funny how that works.

Review section:

Taproot’s Blue Sky Research: Taproot in top form. More details you ask? Well, if you’ve heard previous Taproot songs, they have a sometimes insane mix of singing and screaming. In the middle of a melody, the singer will suddenly scream a syllabol, then go back to singing as though nothing had happened. The newest installment from Taproot continues this trend, though they have harnessed it so it sounds correct. Or, perhaps I have come to expect a scream here and there and it doesn’t faze me anymore. After more than a dozen times through the entire CD, I haven’t found anything unworthy of my ears.

Alien Ant Farm’s Up in the Attic: A quality disk. Every song demands I sing along, though She’s Only Evil torments me with its lyrics.

“Beyond the basement
There lives a girl there
She’s got a face and a lot of hair”

How serious am I to take this song? I’ve always pegged AAF as a playful fun group, and I always smirk at that lyric, but should I be? I think they were channeling Incubus’s Wish You Were Here with the lyrics, “This house is sweet / Oh, it’s bittersweet”

Tye Zamora (the crazy bassist and main reason AAF stayed in my mind long enough for me to purchase ANThology) left the band a few months ago.

Mod 4 Post

Just as we’ve done in all mod 4 posts, questions from the readers will be answered. In some cases, reader posts have been combined or completely made up.

Q. How can you have a mod 4 post when this is post 30, and you have never had a mod 4 post previously?

A. See the title? I’ve decided that alone can decide whether or not the post is a mod 4. Who knows when the title will strike and questions will be answered.

Q. What have you been up to?

A. Excellent question.

Website Stuff
Have you checked out the linker? I put the Car Talk radio show on the list of podcasts I listen to, as well as the tools that could be used to put the show back together in mp3 form. In addition, the list of bands which I have folders for on my computer have been added to the page, with links to whatever felt most official, or what I found first. If I couldn’t find anything on them, or it seems the band is no more, a link was get you unintentionally ignored for a month.

Magic Stuff
Previews of Coldsnap have started showing up on Wizards site. The new old set has some interesting cards. They’re trying pretty hard to make snow covered work. I’m anxious to see what happens at the pre-release. Steve said he should be able to come, though he qualified that by stating his availability is more up in the air since he started working at the Palazzo. I also need to check in with Sully to see if he’d be available for some new old school card flopping.

Energy Drink Stuff
Mad Croc has been my energy drink of choice for the past week or so. It has some of the biting taste of Red Bull, but comes in a bigger can and costs half as much. Plus, it contains Vitamins! Everyone needs Vitamins to start their day, and the thought of a mad croc eating you from the inside out over the course of the day is an added bonus.

Condiment Man Stuff
A Condiment Man movie of Episode Dos and 1/2 has been made (see previous post). The new story where CM faces off against Steve Case was also typed up, though it hasn’t even started the revision process. I’ve also decided to make an aside in the story into a concurrent plot thread instead. In the following story, a new villain is going to be introduced who has his very own sidekick. I’ve also thought about making a few more movies for YouTube that aren’t moving stories.

Time Stuff
My past found some sort of worm hole and jumped into my present over the last weekend. Dave, one of the guys I was good friends with back in Mechanicsburg, found my MySpace page and sent me a message about a month ago. Since I hardly ever check the page and when I do, assume the majority of my mail is junk, let his “Hey” message sit in my inbox for way too long. When I replied, it turns out he, Aaron, and Mike are still good friends who have been up to some crazy stuff since I last saw them over 10 years ago.

TV/Movie Stuff
I’m interested to watch Who Wants to be a Superhero? to see how well it’s done, and somewhat wish I would have known about it sooner. If done right, I think My Super Ex-Girlfriend could be right up my alley. Just watch the trailer.

Q. Is this a good place to ask? Or is email better?

A. It really depends on what you’re after. If you’d like a timely response, email is probably best. Though if I have something ready to post, you may get lucky. One things for sure, sending a message to my MySpace will almost certainly get you unintentionally ignored for a month.

Moving Day Approaches

Time is winding down in the apartment. Cable has been lined up at the new place, and will be pretty extreme. Digital phone, 200+ channels, and some Road Runner all coming at us. Plus, a DVR. Finally, we’re stepping into the recent past.

Magic night happened over the weekend. Sven, Sully, and Heath were in attendance, and Anna’s Steve was there in spirit. Hopefully next time he will be in physical form. Sven, armed with the Boros Legion, cleanly won the tourney format, trouncing everyone in the room, while I with my Gruul Clans only won the group game because Heath, master of the Selesnya Conclave, was being generous. Sully, armed with the Cult of Rakdos, saved my life even though I was to kill him later, and Sven took an enormous bite out of Heath before his own demise. I’m thinking of making the Magic nights more regular, the second Saturday or the month perhaps.

Over the weekend, I experimented with three flavors of Rip It, a tall energy drink at half the price of Monster or Socko. The first, Lime Wrecker, tasted awful. Like Sprite, heavy on the carbonated water, with a tart lime aftertaste. Stay far, far away from it. I tried the second today, Citrus X. It’s an average orange drink. Tasted ok, but as with both the drinks, the energy just wasn’t there. Maybe it’s because I’ve been drinking them in the morning, but it just isn’t doing it for me. It looks like the main ingredient is caffeine, so that could be the culprit. Tomorrow will be the final test for this drink when I try Atomic Pom. If this doesn’t put it over the edge, Rip It will no longer be considered when I find myself in the mood for an energy drink. On a side note, I visited the Socko website for the first time while writing this. There is something magical about running your mouse over “Socko your face!” repeatedly that I just don’t get from the other energy drink

One of these days, I’m going to raid the Kolache Factory. I’ll let you know what I find.
